I would be lying if I said I wasn’t down about not being able to visit Disney World as we had originally planned this upcoming week for our summer vacation. I am definitely feeling a wide range of emotions about this decision that had to be made. Moreover, this decision wasn’t made lightly by any means. I actually waited until July 1st, before officially canceling to see how all would play out.

The Virus That Made Me Do It

See on a side note, my older daughter suffered from RSV Pneumonia when she was very young. After this illness, she suffered bouts of pneumonia and upper respiratory issues every time the weather and seasons changed. We finally got her issues under control over the last few years. She was diagnosed with seasonal allergies and takes singular to help control it.

But then, COVID-19 hit. My girl was nervous, to say the least with all her prior issues with her lungs and chest illnesses from her younger years. I wouldn’t be honest if I said I wasn’t scared out of my mind for her. So, we tried to do everything we could to keep her healthy and away from this virus at all costs.

Knock on wood, she made it through the worst here in NY when the numbers literally were just staggering and soul-crushing. But now, the numbers are way down here in NY. However, in other parts of the country not so much. Florida, for instance, is seeing the virus numbers jump significantly daily now.

Yet, Walt Disney World is still reopening on July 11, 2020. Ironically enough, our summer Disney World trip was to begin on that very same day. Of course, it wasn’t planned that way. I always book the week of my daughter’s birthday for her with our DVC points. As fate would have it, her birthday fell during this week.

In normal times this coincidence would have been a blessing.

But right now, I selfishly wish they would have stayed closed. At least then, I wouldn’t have had to make the pained decision to cancel the trip knowing that Disney is indeed open and we can’t be there.

Don’t get me wrong, logically I know it is the right and only decision I could make for our family. We can’t fly on a plane right now. We most certainly cannot take a chance to stay in a hotel room. Nor, could I have my whole family wear masks for hours on end in the brutal Florida summer heat.

So, here we are days out of what should have been our sixth summer Disney World family vacation in a row. And we are grounded not going anywhere this summer. No Disney vacation planned anytime soon.

Therefore, my heart is heavy and broken. Don’t get me wrong, I most thankful that my daughter is healthy, as is our whole family during these crazy times. But again, I miss my other home–more than words can express. I miss the characters, the parades, the fireworks, the themed food, the rides, and much more.

Home Sweet Home for This Birthday

My oldest will celebrate her birthday at home this year though. But I still plan on making it as special as I can. More so, we are also still a Disney family. I have a few tricks up my sleeve for her. One of the things, I am baking cupcakes and then decorating them to be right of a fairy tale, specifically Cinderella.

That’s right Cinderella Cupcakes are on the menu for her special birthday. I mean if we can’t be in Disney enjoying Disney themed foods or cupcakes, then we have to make them here ourselves. Plus, Cinderella truly makes us think of Disney World (the magical castle and character, too).
