Cheerful & Simple Christmas Kitchen Decor Ideas (2024)

Cheerful and simple Christmas decorating ideas for the kitchen.

Do you decorate your kitchen for Christmas? I love to add some fun Christmas touches each year to our kitchen, as it really is the centre of our home over the holidays. My youngest son and I are already planning our baking and excited to try making some gingerbread salt dough ornaments for our family tree. We’ve constructed some adorable mini gingerbread houses (that you will see on display). I also want to dry some oranges and use them to add some extra zest to our holiday decor.

But really, the true time the kitchen shines over the Christmas season is when you have the chance to host family and friends for holiday gatherings. I’m really excited this year that things have opened up enough that we should be able to celebrate Christmas with those we love in a somewhat more normal way (fingers crossed that it stays that way over the next weeks). As the centre of our homes, the kitchen really deserves as much Christmas decor love as the rest of the house, but in a scaled back way so that it feels festive yet functional at the same time.

This week I’m hosting the Seasonal Simplicity Christmas Tour series and am joined by over 25 of my blogging friends who are also sharing their holiday home tours.

If you have hopped over from a Pop of Pretty, then welcome. I absolutely adore Kerri’s cheerful and classic coastal style. Isn’t their home amazing?! Be sure to check the bottom of today’s post for my friends who are also sharing their tours this week and visit them to take in all the amazing inspiration.

Today I’m sharing our new build kitchen all ready for the holidays! This week I have also shared our farmhouse Scandi Christmas living room and our elegant Christmas dining room and primary bedroom.

When my friends first saw the direction we went with this kitchen design, they commented that it really felt like “us” and reminded them of our lake house kitchen. When designing it I hadn’t made that connection, but now that I look at it I can really see the connection. We had a similar hood fan at the lake house that we had DIY’d, but painted in a light airy coastal blue tone. We also had a planked and coloured peninsula as we didn’t have space in that house for an island.

I definitely love the mix of wood, colour (Knoxville Gray by Benjamin Moore) and white in this kitchen. The gold finishes add an elegance that keeps it from feeling too rustic with all the wood. I really love the X design on the island that our cabinet maker aded – we used and recommend Namor Custom Cabinetry, if you are local.

I shared about how I refinished our old wooden bar stools in this post. They fit perfectly inside the island nook, and keep the hallway space nice and open by snugging nicely into space. The colours of the kitchen really fit well with the Christmas decor that we already owned. I added a cute wreath to our hood fan using a command hook, and then outfitted the shelves with some simple kitchen-y themed Christmas decor.

I buy one of these Italian holiday cakes every holiday season because they are just so pretty to display! I mean, it makes sense to use food as decor in the kitchen, right?!

The open shelves in our kitchen were made by our cabinet maker with the same wood they used for the hood fan and crown moulding. We love how they came out! They are fairly narrow, as we wanted to have some upper cabinetry in this kitchen, but they work well to display a few simple seasonal touches throughout the year.

I dressed them with a some of our mini gingerbread houses, some frosted boughs in a kitchen canister, a red tray, natural wood cutting boards, and a giant canister jar with a cute village display in “snow”. The “PEACE ON EARTH” sign is always a reader favourite, and I’m currently making a printable version to add to my free printable library. I will try to share that on Thursday so you can use it in your decor!

One of the best features of our kitchen is the big wide window that we have above the sink – we actually changed it on the plan from a 4′ window to a 6′ wide one. It meant we couldn’t have upper cabinets flanking it, but we love the openness and extra light instead. Plus, it gave us the perfect spot to add the wall sconces either side!

I thought about adding the wreath behind our stove, but honestly I probably would have caused a fire the first time I tried to cook anything. So up on the hood fan it went – but I love it there, now!

On the long back wall of our kitchen, we have a little beverage center and display nook. I added a few simple Christmas touches to the open shelf above our display cabinets.

Like I shared yesterday, if you own a cloche or two it’s such an easy way to display seasonal items. These mini gingerbread houses are elevated to a new level by placing them under glass, and suddenly look elegant and lovely!

The vintage style Santa cross-stitch was given to us our first year married (20 years ago!) by my husbands oldest sister, and it always make it’s way back into our decor each year. Being somewhat of a cross-stitch failure myself (I lack the patience for that kind of craft), I truly appreciate the time and effort it took her to create it for us.

Another thing I resurrected from our lake house is the hot chocolate station. If you have a tiered tray, you can once again use food (and drinks) to create your holiday decor in the kitchen! I love it when things are both pretty and useful at the same time:)

I’ve also added my son’s hand-painted mug to the tray this year; those special touches might not be the most elegant but they are meaningful, and really that’s what the season is all about. He loves having his special mug displayed there and using it for making delicious treats.

These gingerbread cookies have been refilled several time already. The first day I put them in place, my oldest asked “can I eat these or do you have to take pictures first”. Blogger’s child… poor thing. I wonder what the long term effects of it will be?!
